Beware the Pitfalls of Early Specialization

Scientific research indicates that there are only three sports that require early specialization training, and golf is not one of them.

As parents we all want to see our children succeed in whatever they do but having your child choose one sport, or choosing one for them, at an early age may not necessarily lead them down the road to success. Sport scientists and doctors at the Titleist Performance Institute have concluded that there are only three sports that require early specialization where children must excel at an early age to compete at the highest levels and they are all female sports:

  • Gymnastics
  • Figure Skating
  • Diving

Golfer’s Self Image

How do you see yourself as a golfer?  What do you believe is your self-image on the course?  Have you ever considered how you speak to yourself while you’re playing golf?  Most golfers’ self-talk during a round of golf can be highly destructive.  They berate themselves when they execute poorly and may not even give themselves credit when they perform well.  Golfers need to become more aware of their perceived self-image and begin the process of building a stronger image of the player they want to be.

Assess yourself as a golfer honestly

Every golfer can usually recall something positive they did during a round of golf.  Maybe they sank a long putt on a hole or hit a good drive or iron shot.  Perhaps they chipped a ball up close to the hole or even in.  These positive shots need to be anchored in the player’s memory and they should be recalled frequently.  But at some point a player needs to assess their skills and decide on a plan of action to improve their game and begin the journey of changing their self-image as a golfer.
